The museum was founded on November 20, 1969, as the first natural history museum in Korea and has since been committed to providing educational programs on nature for students and the general public. The museum is devoted to not only doing pure research in natural history but also collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and researching various specimens of animals, plants, insects, minerals, rocks, and fossils.



아이콘Facilities


The museum has Research Laboratory, Lecture Room, Storage Room, and Exhibition Hall (Permanent Exhibition Hall, Special Exhibition Hall, and Diorama Hall). The Permanent Exhibition Hall is divided into six sections: Vertebrates I and II, Invertebrates, Plants, Insects, and Earth Science. Each section exhibits specimens, pictures, photographs, and descriptions. The Diorama Hall is divided into four sections that exhibit the actual ecosystem



아이콘Diorama Hall / Ecology Corner


The museum takes pride in the state-of-the-art Diorama Hall that exhibits the ecosystems of the forest, the sea areas, and the damp areas of the Korean midland. Diorama is the reproduction of ecosystem with specimens, pictures, and life-size models. The Diorama Hall exhibits a total of 60 species and 110 items.

In addition, the Ecology Corner lets the visitors observe the process of breeding and growth of live animals on land and in the water.



아이콘Special Exhibition


The Special Exhibition is an annual event. A total of twenty-seven Special Exhibitions had been held, and each exhibition intensively touched on the specific areas in the field of natural history.

The Permanent Exhibition shows various specimens of animals, plants, insects, minerals, rocks, and fossils throughout the year.

  • Plants Section
    The Plants Section exhibits a variety of plants including marine plants, medicinal plants, naturalized plants, and plant resources. Vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, and actual specimens attract the visitors.

  • Insects Section
    The Insects Section exhibits a variety of insects including rare insects and Southeast Asian insects. Various tools for insect collecting, vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, and actual specimens attract the visitors.

  • Invertebrates Section
    The Invertebrates Section exhibits a variety of invertebrates including protozoan and chordate. Vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, and actual specimens preserved in alcohol attract the visitors. Don’t miss out the interesting exhibits on the rare specimens of marine animals, dangerous marine animals, corals and coral reefs, red tide phenomena, mimesis, camouflage, and symbiosis.

  • Vertebrates I Section
    This section exhibits fish, amphibia, and reptilia. Fish section exhibits jawless fish and jaw fish (cartilaginous fish and bony fish). Amphibia section exhibits actual specimens preserved in alcohol. Reptilia section exhibits foreign specimens. Vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, and actual specimens attract the visitors.

  • Vertebrates II Section
    This section exhibits birds and mammals. Resident birds, migratory birds, and internationally protected birds are exhibited. The life-size wooden model of the exterminated crested shelduck is also in display. Mammal section displays interesting characteristics of various mammals. Vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, and actual specimens attract the visitors.

  • Earth Science Section
    About 230 items of minerals, rocks, and fossils are on display. Don’t miss out the separate exhibitions on meteoric stones, jewelry stones, continental drift theory, and the history of dinosaur.
    Moreover, video theater provides interesting insight into the heavenly bodies. Vivid pictures, detailed descriptions, life-size models, microscopes, CCTV, and actual specimens attract the visitors.
