Communications and Media Research Institute

The Communications and Media Research Institute was established in November, 2005 as an affiliate research department to the Ewha Womans University Department of Social Sciences to cultivate female experts in the field and provide opportunities to research and critically analyze public sentiment and sociocultural phenomena related to the communications field. The institute is equipped with research offices for media studies, and the education center runs the Frontier Journalism and Frontier Video Production Schools, and Public Relations/Advertisement schools, providing scholars with various opportunities in the field.

The institute’s goal is, through this cooperation between the university and the industry, to encourage mutual progress in the industry and academia, as well as to ultimately contribute to innovation within the communications field.

Seoam Media Production Studio

The media production studio is maintained by the Department of Communications and Media and used for practical courses within the major as well as students’ extracurricular activities, school events, and the production of special lecture videos.

Students are able build a strong foundation in video production by observing and gaining personal experience in all steps involved in the production process, including planning, directing, filming, and editing video content. Through providing students a means to rent out a variety of filming equipment we hope to allow them to develop an expertise and practical knowledge needed for the communications industry. A researcher experienced in the industry is on site to guide students in their production process.

Media Career Center

The Media Career Center (MCC) is for students aiming to work in the media as journalists, producers, etc. Located on top floor of the Posco lecture building, it provides a quiet, calm atmosphere for students to study. In the MCC, individual desk space is separated by dividers and a variety of daily, weekly, and monthly periodicals needed in preparing for News and Broadcasting Agency employment are available for students. We also run practice examinations, essay, and thesis exams. The MCC also invites a variety of journalists and producers from major areas in the industry for special lectures or discussions with the students. Students taking part in the MCC’s activities are given priority for these lectures and discussions. Attendees are not only able to expand their understanding of the industry, but also gain key tips in how to prepare for the entrance examinations for major companies. On top of this, the MCC also provides a certain amount of financial benefits for registered students preparing for their media examinations. For example, if a student chooses to enroll in the Frontier Journalism School for more practical education in the field, within budget the MCC may provide up to 50% of the tuition fees. The center also provides testing fees once a year for students taking the TOEIC, TOEFL, ToKL, or other official exams required for employment in media companies. Occasionally, if students are applying for media companies outside of the Seoul area, we cover part of their transportation costs. Through these efforts to support students in their preparation and search for employment, since September, 1997, the MCC has placed an average of over ten students per year in major players in the media market, like the Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, Hankyore, KBS, MBC, SBS, and others.
