This course will provide the fundamentals of academic writing. The course is based on an overview of paragraph-to-essay writing. We will begin writing at the paragraph level which will help students master basic writing skills before moving on to longer academic essays. In the final weeks, this course will teach students citation skills to avoid plagiarism through a short research paper (3-4 pages). There will be interesting readings for discussion and grammar and writing-style tips with each lesson. After completing this course, students will have the necessary skills to write academic papers of high quality with good organization and style, correct grammar, and proper citations. During the last few classes, students will learn test writing for TOEFL and cover letter writing for internships or jobs they will apply for in the future. All lessons will be taught in English to help students enhance their listening and speaking skills. Korean can be used by students if needed.

* Note: Feedback on your papers will be given through live consultation and email. Please make sure to do the assignments on time and send them no later than 9 pm.

 In the course, students will be able to gain ample opportunities to practice writing academic essays. In addition, this course will teach students citation skills to avoid plagiarism through a short research paper (3-4 pages). There will also be grammar lessons. After completing this course, students will have attained the necessary skills to write academic papers with correct citations. In addition, students will learn how to write cover letters and résumé for internships or jobs they will apply for in the future. This course will be taught in English to help students develop skills to function in an English-taught class.

 Note that lectures will be presented face-to-face (in a classroom), although some lectures that have been pre-recorded will also be offered for out-of-class viewing. Furthermore, the class will be managed through Google Classroom (not Cyber Campus), with all materials posted in Google Classroom. Assignments should be submitted as Google Documents through Google Classroom. One-on-one consultations with the instructor will be available both in-person and online (through Zoom).

This course is designed for students who want to enhance their writing skills and want to gain confidence in academic writing. Although we will not write a long research paper (such as a graduation thesis), we will look at how to effectively support an argument in an academic essay using scholarly sources. Students should also be ready to learn through pair or group assignments (ex: peer editing).
