[Explanation]
"The Topography of Modern Knowledge and Translation" explores the channels and agents through which modern knowledge in Western humanities was introduced and translated into Korea, China, and Japan in the early twentieth century, and further examines what particular area of knowledge was chosen to be translated. The formation of Korea’s modern knowledge in humanities and the process of translation are inextricably linked to the colonial and postcolonial elements within Korea’s knowledge in humanities. By looking deeper into this close association, this book tries to step beyond the previous interpretations provided by translation studies, where perception is formed through a triangular structure of the modern, the act of translation, and Japan. Instead it seeks new possibilities within the dynamic knowledge sphere of North Asia where the formation of Korea’s modern knowledge in humanities and the issues in translation can be examined anew, and in-depth inquiries can be made into the postcolonial elements of the Korean modern period.
