Chan Shu Ching Isabelle
Isabelle is an advocate for women’s rights, democracy, and social justice. Her research interests include women and literature, feminist theories, women in media, and sexuality. She read Literature in English and Translation at the University of Hong Kong before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a postgraduate student, majoring in Gender Studies. Since her previous studies focus mainly on gender issues in Hong Kong, China, and Turkey, she hopes to acquire a ‘full’ Asian perspective by exploring Asian women’s issues in detail at Ewha, a front-runner in women’s rights movements in Korea.
She has worked as an educator for over 8 years, devoting much of her time to formulating effective learning policies for ESLs (English as a Second Language Learners). While teaching English at schools and educational institutions, Isabelle also collaborated closely with local activists in promoting women’s rights by participating in voluntary work at numerous non-profits, including The Women’s Foundation and HerFund, expanding her knowledge on a broad spectrum of women living in Hong Kong, from new immigrants, to deprived housewives, to well-educated professionals. In 2019, she launched her first business, providing online English learning services to children in Hong Kong.
Her political awakening came in 2014 after the Umbrella Movement happened, where she was, rather brutally, reminded of the precious price of freedom, and the fact that apoliticism or pure ignorance can be alarming, and detrimental even to social progress. She began to rethink the meaning of justice and social action, and engage in similar endeavors to push for social change. Isabelle believes in the power of change, and of infusing passion into everything she does.
