Workshop 1 Teaching Peace and Women’s Human Rights
Date: November 20, 2019; 15:00-17:00
Venue: Asian Center for Women’s Studies ACWS Meeting Hall (1st floor)
Presenter: Eka Srimulyani (Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Indonesia)
Abstract:
In most of cases, peace is always considered as the issue or matter handled by, only related to, or concerned with two conflicting combatant parties. As mostly non-combatants, women are excluded from the process and their perspectives are hardly heard. It is not only that women are marginalized in formal peace talks; women’s human rights are also violated based on a number of gender-based violence cases that normally occur as part of the armed conflict. The presentation will begin with a discussion on women and peace by locating the issue from the armed conflict in Aceh, Indonesia. It will be followed by exploring how to introduce the issue of women’s rights from conflict and peace perspective and how to integrate the material throughout the subject taught at the university, such as through a lecture on peace psychology.
