아시아여성학센터는 오는 7월 9일부터 11일까지 국제학술대회 "B/ordering the Global: Transnational Feminist Critiques from Asia"를 개최합니다.
이 학술대회는 ‘국경/경계’를 단지 지도 위의 선으로 보지 않습니다. ‘국경/경계(bordering/ordering)’는 누구의 이동이 허용되는지, 누구의 노동과 돌봄이 값싸게 동원되는지, 그리고 누구의 몸과 건강, 재생산과 생존이 ‘(비)정상’ 혹은 ‘(비)합법적’으로 분류되는지를 가르는 규칙과 질서로 작동합니다. 전쟁과 기후위기, AI·감시 기술의 확산, 극단주의와 혐오의 부상 속에서 경계는 더 정교하고 일상적인 방식으로 삶을 구획하고 있습니다. 본 학술대회는 트랜스내셔널 페미니즘의 시선으로 “무엇이 문제인가”를 넘어, “어떻게 함께 견디고 바꾸며 다시 상상할 것인가”를 묻는 자리입니다.
이번 학술대회는 이주·국경 통치와 시민권, 인종, 노동·돌봄·재생산, 몸·건강·장애, 디지털 플랫폼/AI와 감시, 문화·정동·재현 등 다양한 주제를 ‘경계 만들기’라는 문제의식으로 교차시키며, ‘아시아’를 지리적 범주로만 이해하는 시각에 새로운 질문을 던집니다.
총 33개국 247개 기관이 참여하고, 이화여자대학교 캠퍼스와 Zoom(온라인)에서 117개 패널이 운영될 예정입니다. 연구자뿐 아니라 학생과 시민사회 활동가 등 다양한 참여자들이 모여, 이론적 논의와 실천적 사례를 폭넓게 공유할 자리가 될 것입니다.
또한 첫째 날에는 기조강연 연사로 칼린디 보라(Kalindi Vora), 멜 첸(Mel Y. Chen), 김현미 세 분을 모시고 AI와 인간/비인간의 경계, 제국과 지식생산, 인종·물질성·환경·장애를 둘러싼 쟁점을 확장합니다. 둘째 날과 셋째 날에도 「Asian Journal of Women's Studies」 특별 세션, 영화 〈에디 엘리스: 테이크〉 상영 및 GV, 『Queer Throughlines』 저자 초청 북토크 등 다채로운 프로그램이 마련되어 있습니다.
아시아의 현장에서 출발한 질문을 나누고, 새로운 연대와 미래의 가능성을 함께 고민하며 성찰하고자 하는 이번 학술대회에 많은 분들이 함께해 주시길 바랍니다.
기조강연 소개📖
오늘날 우리는 강화되는 국경, 기술적 전환, 심화되는 불평등의 시대를 살아가고 있습니다. 본 국제학술대회의 기조강연 연사들은 이러한 변화 속에서 친밀성, 인종, 기술, 몸, 그리고 지식 생산의 문제를 가로지르며, 현대 사회의 질서와 권력을 페미니즘적·탈식민적·초국적 관점에서 다시 사유할 것을 제안합니다. 이들의 작업은 어떤 삶과 관계, 감각, 그리고 존재가 가치 있는 것으로 인정되고, 또 어떤 존재들이 배제되거나 통제 가능한 대상으로 구성되는지를 비판적으로 검토합니다.
멜 첸은 지배적인 방법론과 학문 체계가 무엇을 감각하지 못하게 만드는지를 질문하며, 기존의 규율화된 지식 생산이 포착하지 못하는 감각, 관계성, 비규범적 삶의 가능성을 탐색합니다.
칼린디 보라는 AI와 기술 담론을 둘러싼 ‘인간’의 위기를 비판적으로 분석하며, 탈식민주의·흑인연구·페미니즘의 관점에서 인간성 자체를 다시 사유할 가능성을 제시합니다.
김현미는 한국 남성성의 세계화와 친밀성의 정치학을 통해, 친밀성이 인종, 젠더, 재생산, 디지털 권력이 교차하며 사회 질서를 재조직하는 핵심 정치적 공간이 되었음을 보여줍니다.
이러한 대화들은 경계(border)가 단지 국가의 영토를 구분하는 선이 아니라, 친밀성, 기술, 인간성, 지식 생산과 같은 다양한 사회적 관계 속에서 끊임없이 구성되고 재조직되는 과정임을 드러냅니다.
이처럼 국제학술대회 "B/ordering the Global: Transnational Feminist Critiques from Asia"는 아시아로부터 출발하는 초국적 페미니즘 비판을 통해 오늘날의 경계와 질서를 다시 질문하며, 새로운 사회적 관계와 연대의 가능성을 모색하고자 합니다.

"Method's Negative Imprint"
If method is what conveys production of knowledge, then where are the limits of analysis at its heart, and what is the character of such limits? Furthermore, what is the quiet reach of imperial thought? Whether or not current intensities of violence as well as urges for repair call for them, I am interested in the possibilities for pause, to reflect again on the juncture of method and intellectual doing on the one hand, and the scenes of “current conditions” on the other. This talk illustrates a conceit which I call the space of “method’s negative imprint”, where entrainments of habitual, legitimated effort, often limned through models coveted by disciplinarity, seem to fail -- yet something else flourishes. In this talk I will reflect on the possibilities of invitations to intellectual practice of what is wrong and/or unwieldy: the conduction of untrainable energies, the communing of unformalizable senses, where, for instance, spirit and praxes of life-giving generation have have been deflected to the nonsecular, irrational, and unreasonable. To the extent that unlearning can be understood as re-sensing, I am concerned with sensory work done not simply through vectors of lexicality, making determined allowances for chaotic, confusing, contribution. I will attempt to ground some of this discussion in previous considerations of race, materiality, environment, and disability.

멜 첸은 UC 버클리(U.C. Berkeley) 젠더·여성학과의 리처드 및 로다 골드만 석좌교수(Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor)이다. 듀크대학교 출판부(Duke University Press)에서 출간된 『Animacies: Biopolitics, Racial Mattering, and Queer Affect』(2012)와 『Intoxicated: Race, Disability and Chemical Intimacies of Empire』(2023)의 저자이며, 「Crip Genealogies」(2023)의 공동 편집자다. 또한 동 출판사에서 “아니마(Anima)” 도서 시리즈를 공동 편집하고 있다. 현재는 트랜스*, 인종, 이주민의 비인간주의(inhumanisms)에 관한 멀티미디어 프로젝트를 진행 중이다. 다양한 학술지 및 예술 매체를 통해 폭넓게 글을 발표하고 있으며, 샌프란시스코에 기반을 둔 “Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project”의 이사회 이사로도 활동 중이다.
"AI and the Crisis of the Human"
The question of what it means to be human is at the center of public discourse surrounding our interactions with so-called artificial intelligence, presenting a critical opportunity for feminist and anti-racist anthropology. This talk engages with the current moment of meaning-making in the face of emerging technologies to revisit postcolonial, decolonial, and Black studies critiques of the human and of post-Enlightenment reason. These fields have long worked to recover submerged, silenced, or otherwise erased histories of the colonized, offering alternative accounts of who counts as a subject and what forms of life are possible. Drawing on preliminary fieldwork in AI ethics spaces in Europe and the U.S., alongside speculative AI designs that challenge dominant norms, this talk explores the potential of redescribing the human (Wynter 2003) as a foundation for confronting the exclusion of marginalized worldviews from modernity.

칼린디 보라는 예일대학교(Yale University)의 미국학, 여성·젠더·섹슈얼리티학, 인류학과 교수이자 과학 및 의학사(History of Science and Medicine) 연계 교수(affiliate appointment)이다. 예일대 부임 전에는 UC 데이비스(UC Davis)에서 젠더·여성·섹슈얼리티학과 교수이자 페미니스트 연구소(Feminist Research Institute) 소장을 역임했다. 주요 저서로는 2018년 세계과학기술학회(4S) 버널상(Bernal Prize) 수상작인 『Life Support: Biocapital and the New History of Outsourced Labor』, 네다 아타나소스키(Neda Atanasoski)와 공저한 『Surrogate Humanity: Race Robots and the Politics of Technological Futures』(2019), 『Re-Imagining Reproduction: Surrogacy, Labor and Technologies of Human Reproduction』(2023)이 있다. 또한 스타 코랩(Star Colab)과 『Transforming Science: Theory and Practice』(2026 출간 예정)를, 프레카리티 랩(Precarity Lab)과 『Technoprecarious』을 공저했다.
"Crossing Intimate Boundaries:
A Feminist Reflection on Globalized Korean Masculinities, Race, and Digital Violence"
Korean masculinities have gained unprecedented global visibility through K-pop and digital culture, often circulating as emotionally expressive, caring, and progressive forms of masculinity. This presentation critically examines the globalization of Korean masculinities from a feminist perspective. Over the past decade, I argue that Korean feminism has contributed to the “democratization of intimacy” by transforming issues such as sexual violence, care, dating, and reproduction into central democratic concerns. At the same time, Korean masculinities crossing borders have become increasingly entangled with racial hierarchy, digital exploitation, and reproductive politics. Drawing on recent interviews with Korean men, I explore how masculinity is being renegotiated amid a broader crisis of intimacy and social reproduction, asking whether alternative forms of care, vulnerability, and relationality can emerge within these contradictions.■ 연사 약력
김현미는 현재 연세대학교 문화인류학과 교수이며 페미니스트 문화연구자이다. 장기적인 현장연구를 통해 젠더화된 노동의 정치경제, 국제결혼과 이주, 난민 정치, 생태적 미래를 연구해왔다. 그의 연구는 돌봄, 불평등, 이동성이 오늘날 한국 사회에서 시민권, 소속감, 사회정의를 어떻게 재구성하고 있는지를 탐구한다. 한국여성학회 회장과 에코페미니스트연구센터 소장을 역임하면서 페미니즘 연구, 학제적 대화, 시민사회 활동을 연결하는 데 관심을 가지고 있다. 주요 저서로는 『글로벌시대의 문화번역』(2005), 『우리는 모두 집을 떠난다: 한국에서 이주자로 살아가기』(2014, 중국어판 2019), 『페미니스트 라이프스타일』(2021), 『흠결 없는 파편들의 사회: 20~60대 여성들의 노동 경험과 모험』(2023)이 있으며, 『Multiculturalism in East Asia』(2016)를 공동 편집했다.
