조선시대 대

조선시대 대

Dae帶  refers to belts or straps worn around the waist. A simple form of waistbands, long pieces of cloth or leather and tied around the waist, was originally used for a practical purpose of keeping clothes in place. Then, belts developed into various forms as a symbolic purpose was added in step with the class stratification of society.

Based on the material and production method, dae can be categorized into pobaekdae made of fabric, jodae, braided belts woven with silk threads, and gwadae, belts decorated with ornaments on leather or fabric, and further subdivided according to their shape, usage, and materials. Belts in the Joseon Dynasty were largely worn by men, the most widely known being belts decorated with ornaments worn over official attires, also called gakdae meaning official’s belts which had many names depending on their materials. Braided belts (jodae) such as broad waist cords (gwangdahoe) and narrow waist cords (sejodae) were worn over plain clothes, and waist belts (yodae) or military sashes (jeondae) over military uniforms. As the ties of jeogori evolved into goreum, belts used by women were narrowed down to ceremonial belts (daedae) worn over ceremonial robes such as wonsam and hwalot and bands used for keeping skirt hems off the ground.

The exhibition features various dae worn over official attires of the Joseon period, including official’s belts which indicated social status using different materials for ornaments by rank, ceremonial belts worn over courtiers’ robes for ceremonies and royal ancestral rites, and waist belts and military sashes used for military uniforms. Visitors can also see braided belts worn over plain clothes to complete the outfit, ceremonial belts wrapped around women’s ceremonial attires, and sash belts for children embroidered with auspicious patterns wishing for the child’s health and longevity.

COSTUMES OF JEJU |  September 19, 2019 – August 27, 2020

The Chang Budeok Memorial Gallery Ewha Womans University 제주복식 JEJU COSTUME

Jeju is a beautiful island that has been designated as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO thanks to its well-preserved ecological environment. However, the island soil which was mainly formed from volcanic rocks offered a harsh environment for people to build their lives on. Faced with such hardship, the people of Jeju began to substitute scarce materials with alternatives found more commonly on the island, which eventually led to the development of a unique culture of their own.

Since most residents’ daily lives were devoted to labor, their styles of dress also evolved into the forms most suitable for working in. Herdsmen made and wore practical cold weather clothing using fur and leather that was readily available in their surroundings, while farmers wore garot dyed with unripe persimmons as both work clothes and everyday dress. Meanwhile, haenyeo or female divers who worked the sea wore mulsojungi, diving suits with a functional design that were made using only a small amAount of fabric.

As Jeju has a favorable environment for horse breeding, it has long been a center for the development of horsehair craft using horse manes or horsehair. Traditional headgear made of horsehair were once a Jeju specialty and making such hats was a very popular source of income near the port area which was conveniently located for shipping products to the mainland.

This exhibition showcases work clothes made of materials readily found in nature that strongly reflect Jeju’s geographical characteristics, including garot, mulsojungi, hats and shoes, along with traditional wedding costumes for both bride and bridegroom, as well as more casual clothing. In addition, it presents a variety of horsehair hats typical of Jeju handicrafts, along with storage cases and the production tools used to make them. Through the unique attire of Jeju which is unlike that found in other parts of the country, we can catch a glimpse of the tenacious spirit of Jeju residents who adapted themselves to nature through the creation of practical clothing.
