Ecoscience institute was first established in 1997 as a research and educational program under the name Natural History Research Institute. Its purpose was to increase the comprehension of natural environment, and the conservation of biodiversity. The institute carried out research projects and strived to educate natural history and science to the public, and increase an awareness on the importance of biodiversity.
The Natural History Research Institute grew and prospered through continuously conducting both research and educational programs. In order to focus on developing a deeper comprehension of ecosystem which embraces the understanding of the natural environment, the Natural History Research Institute was revised as Ecoscience Research Institute in 2006. Since its establishment, Ecoscience Research Institute has faithfully performed and improved research and education in the field. The purpose of this institute is to 1) run the first and the best liaison program in the field of environment and ecosystem in Korea, 2) manage the education and research agency which constructs the industrial.education.research joint system that combines ecology and life science field, 3) and to foster international level experts in environment and ecosystem.
Currently, four research centers, Environment Change Research Center, Biodiversity Research Center, Biomimicry Research Center, and Eco Education Research Center constitutes this institute. Affiliated professors and researchers of Ewha Womans University are carrying out theoretical and experimental research on the field. Moreover, Ecoscience Research Institute and Natural History Museum have collaborated to host international and national symposiums and workshops. This particular collaboration contributes to academia and community through publishing research journals and opening special exhibitions. Particularly, variety of educational programs such as natural history class, public lectures, ecosystem exploration, exhibition hall education, discovery event, and fieldtrips are open to all ages, enhancing their understanding and interest of the natural environment.
