Chronology

What do you do when you arrive at the airport

You can first exchange money. The exchange rates are nearly the same in all banks, so you will not lose much by changing your money right away. Several banks are available at the airport. You can find them easily or you can ask at the information desk.
Also, try to gather some maps of Seoul and of Korea. These maps are available at car-renting counter, hotels counter, or tourists counters. You can find maps in different languages (English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese).

Airport Transportation

Airport Shuttle Bus
To come to Ewha, you can take number 602 bus from bus stop 5B or 12A at Incheon international airport. The bus fare will be 10,000 Korean won. The bus leaves the airport every 10-15 minutes and it will take about 90-110 minutes to get to Ewha. The stop you need to get off at is E-Wha-Yeo-Dae(Ewha Womans University) stop. After you get off the bus, take a taxi and ask for "E-Wha-Yeo-Dae Ki-Sook-Sa", the dormitory, or you can walk for 10minutes.

You can simply print out the ‘Driving Direction for Taxi Drivers’ and show it to them.

What to do the first day of your arrival

It maybe too adventurous to decide to go shopping or visit places the very first day of your arrival. We suggest that you first find where the nearest international cash machine(ATM) is. After this, you can have a look at the map of the campus and Ewha neighborhood. Also, try to find little restaurants, or places to eat in case you are hungry. There is a multiple of cheap restaurants around the campus. Be careful while choosing. Your body is not yet adapted to Korean food. Therefore, your stomach could react angrily to some fish soups or spicy foods. If you really want to go and walk, we recommend the tour of campus. It is a beautiful place and you can’t be lost. Finally, try to rest!

What to do the first week of your arrival

Try to meet people in the dormitory or near the place where you live. Most of the other students will be as lost as you, and can therefore try to help each other.
We strongly urge you to pay a visit to the Ewha Office of Global Affairs, to notify us that you arrived. We will provide you with some information concerning your classes, and it will also be a good way to talk to native Koreans. If you want to get to know the Ewha campus more, complete an application for an Ewha Campus Tour. You can make a reservation by calling 3277-2050, and make sure it is done at least ten days in advance. Buddy Tours are also available for exchange students if you are planning to study for a long term. You may then open a Korean bank account, at the Shin Han Bank on campus. For this, you will need to bring your passport to fill out an application. It will also be helpful if you have someone with you who can speak Korean if you are unsure about your own abilities. You can also start wandering around Ewha, discover nice and useful places, and maybe take the subway to visit some famous sites. Do not be afraid of taking the subway, as it is a very convenient means of transportation.

Transportation

One of the best things about Seoul is it’s different modes of transportation.

Walking

Walking is the best way to get familiar with the area. In Korea, automobiles drive on the right, people usually walk up the stairs on the left. Sometimes you will find reckless drivers, so please be cautious.

Taxi

Taxis can be a practical way to travel, but can be expensive if you are traveling a long distance. The basic fare is 2,400 won for a regular taxi, and the black luxury taxis (called “deluxe taxis”) will cost more, starting at the basic fare of 5,000 won. Taxi fares increase 20% after midnight.

Train

Taking a 10-minute walk from Ewha will bring you to the railway station called Shinchon-yeok. By this train you can take a day trip to Kyeonggi-Do near Seoul, which has a lot of tourist attractions. Coffee shops and restaurants have their own character, and you can spend one day just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
If you want to take a railway trip to other provinces more distant from Seoul, you have to take a train from Seoul Train Station or Chung-ryang-ri Train Station. In addition, the high-speed railway (KTX: Korea Train Express) will start services in April, 2004.You can look up relevant travel information at the website of the Korea National Railroad ( www.korail.go.kr ).

Subway

The subway is often the easiest and quickest way to get to your destination in Seoul as the lines run to almost everywhere throughout the city. You can either buy a one-way ticket, which is 1,200 won or a pass (jung-aek-kwon), which is sold in 10,000 won denominations. A pre-paid card is also useful and convenient if you use the subway often. All signs and most announcements are in Korean and English. In addition, you can distinguish lines by their colors and the stops are numbered as well.
There are 10 subway lines in Seoul with more lines currently under construction. To get to Ewha, take the Green line (number 2) and get off at “E-dae-yeok”, which is short for the Ewha Womans University stop.
You can look up relevant information at the official website of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation at http://www.seoulsubway.co.kr . In addition, if you get lost or need information related to the subway system, you can contact 735-5678 for English help.

Bus

There are two types of buses in Korea: “regular city bus” and “seat bus”. The differences, in principle, between the two buses are that on “seat buses,” you are guaranteed seats and a faster arrival to your destination with fewer stops, while seats are not guaranteed on “regular city buses.” The fare for “regular city buses” is 1,200 won while the “seat buses” cost 1,700~1,900 won for one-way. For your convenience, it is possible to use a bus card to pay the fare instead of paying by cash. Since bus lines are very complicated even for Seoul residents, we recommend you to use the subway unless you are certain about bus number and the stop. If you want to go on a bus trip to other provinces, you can take an express bus at Express Bus Terminal in Banpo-Dong. Take subway line number 3 or line number 7 and get off at the Express Bus Terminal Stop.
