In June 2013, celebrating its 127th anniversary, Ewha opened the Welcome Center, the first of its kind to open on a university campus in Korea. Many prestigious universities overseas, such as Harvard University and Stanford University, operate facilities for visitors, but Ewha has become the first university to establish one in Korea.

The opening ceremony was held on May 31, 2013, and the Welcome Center, which underwent test operations for 10 days after the event, will serve as a comprehensive information center for alumnae, domestic and international visitors, prospective students, and local residents, while also contributing to global promotion.

At the ceremony, President Kim Sun-Uk said, “The Ewha Welcome Center will plant the image of Ewha as a school more welcoming to our prospective students at high schools, and form sustainable networks with alumnae. In addition, it will become a gateway to local communities and the world for domestic and international educational institutes and organizations, a front door to visitors and local residents, and a base to promote Ewha’s brand value.”

About 200 special guests attended the event, including President Kim, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Ewha Womans University Chang Myong-Sue, former chairperson Chung Ii-sook, President Emeritus Yoon Hoo Jung, former presidents Chang Sang, Shin In-ryung, and Lee Bae Yong, and President of Ewha Alumnae Association Jo Jong-nam.

Built in the underground space below the main gate, the 681.5 square-meter space (the exhibition hall and the gift shop take up 394.8 square-meters) consists of an information desk, an exhibition hall, Photo Zone and a gift shop.

The exhibition hall is divided into the History Gallery, Ewha Inside, and Video Zone. The History Gallery consists of mural exhibitions showcasing Ewha Spirit, exhibiting its founding spirit and emblem; History Wall, introducing key moments in Ewha’s past through a digital photo slideshow; and Ewha Now, which displays Ewha’s present and future through its achievements and related statistics. Ewha Inside introduces Ewha People (consisting of Ewha’s Pioneers; Ewha and Global Leaders; and Ewha’s Presidents) and Ewha Power (Colleges & Graduate Schools; Research at Ewha; Global Ewha; and Ewha Campus), and displays images of the four seasons at Ewha Womans University, university promotional videos, and the film Ewha’s Past and Present unfold on a 16-meter-wide screen display in the Video Zone.

At the Photo Zone, visitors can take photographs capturing memories of Ewha, then receive these photos through email as files or purchase them as print-outs. This offers visitors a chance to contribute to the development of Ewha’s future global leaders, as all proceeds from these purchases go to their education. From the fall 2013 semester, the Welcome Center has expanded its Campus Tours, which was operated only for prospective students, by organizing Welcome Tours for all visitors (including international tourists) as well as Themed Tours focusing on Ewha’s architecture or history.

From June 10, 2013 Ewha Welcome Centers is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
