Love as a Mode of World-Making:
Race, Class, and Borders in Marriages for African Asylum-Seekers in Hong Kong
Sealing Cheng, Chinese University of Hong Kong
This paper discusses how inequalities of race and class intersect with the exclusionary border regime in the lives of two asylum-seeking men. It chronicles over a 12-year period how the two African men negotiate with the gendered demands of courtship, marriage, and parenthood in the context of a racial-border regime increasingly embedded in the imagined Chinese nation. With particular reference to their marriage and family lives – one with a local Hong Kong resident, and one with a fellow asylum-seeker, the analysis examines how the two couples navigate the violence of the border regime in different ways. It makes the argument that coping with the precarity of being an “illegal immigrant,” of detention, and deportation, everyday practices of care could be an anchoring device to assure asylum-seekers of a place in the world. However, care practices’ potential for world-making against the odds require particular reconfiguration of ideas about self, gender, and family that are not often available or desirable. How is intimacy carved out of the rugged terrain of familial objection, financial precarity, and immigration limbo? What are the potential of everyday care practices to reconfigure, over time, gender norms and racial stereotypes in the family and the local community? The “success” and the “failure” of the two couples will also be illuminate on how our intimate lives are necessarily about building possible futures within broader structures of race, class, and borders.
