Title : 2016 International Conference on Girls’ Health

We cordially invite you to the “2016 International Conference on Girls’ Health”

The Institute for Development and Human Security (IDHS) of Ewha Womans University has been conducting research on “Advocacy for Korean Engagement in Global Health and Development” from 2013 with research grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The research focuses on South Korea’s engagement with international development cooperation through raising the issues of global health, awareness, and support for South Korea’s ODA efforts. This research also develops a global network between international and domestic organizations.

Our research findings have shown that there is a critical need to focus on comprehensive health issues of girls as a catalyst to improve the health of mothers, children and girls, thereby reducing the shortfalls of MDGs 4 and 5.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were announced in 2001 at the UN, have made important in-roads for poverty reduction and social development around the world. However, the goals of reducing child mortality (goal 4) and improving maternal health (goal 5) were the farthest from reaching their targets. As we enter a new era of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), accelerated efforts to improve the well-being of girls and to solve their health problems must be achieved through a comprehensive approach that includes health, education and empowerment.

President Park Geun-Hye of the Republic of Korea announced the “Better Life for Girls” Initiative at the UN Sustainable Development Summit on September 26, 2015 in order to promote the health and education of girls in developing countries for five years through South Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) from 2016-2020.

In this context, Ewha Womans University is proud to host the “2016 International Conference on Girls’ Health” on June 8, 2016 (Wed) at Ewha Womans University, Republic of Korea. The main objectives of the conference include promoting global awareness on girls’ health in developing countries and providing creative solutions for improving the well-being of girls together with the South Korean government, international organizations, donor countries, foundations, and international civil society organizations. The conference consists of keynote speeches, panel discussion and presentations by the top 3 winners of the  “2016 International Girls’ Health Student Writing Competition.”

The “2016 International Conference on Girls’ Health” expects to spread the rising importance of girls’ health in developing countries through the voices of students worldwide. Enhancing leadership of the young generation from various fields of interest through problem-solving processes is also expected.

Please join us for the conference.

(Lunch will be provided).
