초록

최근 성매매 산업과 직접 관련이 없어 보이는 금융업자들이 성매매 산업의 내부 인물군으로 추가되었다고 보고된다. 본 연구는 이러한 변화된 현실을 어떻게 분석할 것인지 질문한다. 이에 답하기 위해 성매매 산업 안팎에서 민주적으로 확대된 신용을 이용하는 여성들을 살펴보았다. 이들은 신용과 연동하는 부채를 통해 학생이 되거나 자산 소유자가 되는 기회를 획득하고 있었으며 이런 맥락에서 성매매를 하는 것을 “자유로운” “선택”이라고 말하고 있다. 이들은 이전 시대 포주와의 관계에서 주어진 선불금과 달리 비인격적인 형태로 대출 상품이 거래되는 변화 속에서 이러한 ‘자유’를 적극적으로 의미화한다. 하지만 결국 여러 겹의 부채가 빠르게 회전하는 가운데 자신들의 신용을 관리하고 자유를 추구하고자 하는 여성 스스로의 의지와 채무자 여성들을 인입하고자 하는 성매매 산업의 요구가 결합되어 여성들은 파산할 수 없는 상황에 놓인다. 본고는 여성의 몸을 수단화하며 확대재생산하고 있는 금융 자본이 허락한 자유의 기회를 통해 성매매 여성들은 ‘자유로운’ ‘파산 불가능한 주체’가 된다고 분석하였다. 이 시대 성매매 여성들은 자유 획득의 비용을 개인이 지불하도록 만드는 자본의 전략 속에서 부채 경제를 떠받치고 있는 합법적인 보충물로 성매매 산업에 더욱 중층적으로 결박되고 있다. 그러므로 최근 변화된 성매매 경제 현실은 성매매 경제에 새로운 착취자가 추가된 것이 아니라, 이 시대 부채 경제와 성매매 경제가 연동하면서 확대 재생산되고 있는 금융화의 문제로 분석되어야 할 것이다.

The financiers who did not seem to be directly involved with the prostitution became the insiders of sex industry recently. This article deals with the way of analysis for this changing reality. The debt of prostitutes no longer occurred in the interpersonal relationship with their pimps, but became a profit making tool by being traded in the form of impersonal securities. As a result, women indulged in the fantasy that they were no longer subordinated, considering themselves as independent economic subjects that directly control one’s credit and debt. Even though their life as a whole becomes a target of financial expropriation, women defined the self-investment through debt as “freedom” and tried not to break the circuit of debt permitted to them by individually paying high interests and commissions. For them, “freedom” implied having both the opportunity and the means to realize their desire, which only the debt provided by the sex industry can offer. Being the ‘security’ of multi-layered debts and at the same time the only resource that contributes to credit reproduction in the financialized sex industry, women were reborn as ‘free’ ‘never-insolvent subjects’ tied more deeply to the sex industry. Prostitutes being ‘free’ ‘never-insolvent subjects’ in the sex industry meant that they became ‘bodies that cannot stop prostitution’ through utilization of expanded credit.
