초록

이 글은 북한여성연구의 활성화의 조건과 여성주의적 확장가능성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그동안 북한학과 여성학에서 북한여성연구는 제한적으로 이루어졌다. 따라서 이 글은 북한학과 여성학에서 북한여성연구가 활성화되기 위한 조건과 여성주의적 개입의 가능성을 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 그동안 북한학과 여성학에서 진행되어 온 북한여성연구의 궤적을 각 분야의 주요 학술지를 중심으로 살펴보고, 북한여성연구의 여성주의적 개입 또는 비개입의 맥락을 살펴보았다. 북한학에서는 2000년대 들어 북한여성연구가 상대적으로 활성화된 경향이 있고, 주로 북한의 시장화에 따른 여성 삶의 변화와 공식담론에서 나타나는 여성상에 대한 탐구를 하였다. 여성학에서는 1990년대에 북한여성연구가 활성화되었고, 2000년대 들어 간헐적으로 연구가 진행되었다. 여성학과 북한학에서 북한여성연구가 활성화된 것은 당시의 국내외 정세와 북한체제의 변화가 관련이 있었다. 그러나 전반적으로 여성학이나 북한학에서 북한여성연구는 충분히 이루어지는 못했다. 북한여성연구의 여성주의적 비/개입의 맥락들을 살펴보면 우선 북한여성 연구자의 위치성이 북한여성연구의 주제와 접근 방법에 영향을 주었고, 구조적으로는 북한학 학문공동체 내의 성별분업, 프로젝트 중심의 학문 재생산 구조, 연구자의 재생산 문제가 있었다. 이러한 한계를 넘어 북한여성연구에 대한 여성주의 접근의 활성화를 도모하기 위한 조건들로 이 글에서는 객관성과 위치성의 재구성을 통한기존 북한연구 패러다임의 전환과 여성학연구 성과의 북한여성연구 접목을 제안하였다.

This article aims to explore the conditions that activate North Korean women’s research and the possibility of feminist approach to North Korean Women. Research on North Korean women has been limited to North Korean studies and women’s studies. Thus, this article intends to examine the possibility of feminist intervention in North Korean women’s studies and the conditions necessary to activate North Korean women’s research in North Korean studies and women’s studies. To this end, the history of North Korean women’s research in North Korean studies and women’s studies was examined mainly through prominent journals in the respective fields, and the context of feminist intervention or nonintervention in North Korean women was also explored. Compared to the past, in the 2000s, North Korean researchers began to research North Korean women more actively, with a focus on the image of women in public discourse and the changes in women’s life after the market economy was introduced. In the 1990s, scholars in the field of women’s studies actively researched North Korean women, but this slowed down in the 2000s. The activating of North Korean women’s research in women’s studies and North Korean studies was related to changes in the domestic and international circumstances and the North Korean system. In general, however, neither women’s studies nor North Korean studies covered North Korean women’s research very deeply. The contexts of feminist non/intervention in North Korean women’s research were as follows. The positionality of researchers of North Korean women influenced the topics and the approach to North Korean women’s research. Structually, there were gender division of labor in the academic community of North Korean studies, the constraints in project-based researches and the difficulties of reproducing researchers. To overcome such limitations and to promote the activating of the feminist approach in North Korean women’s research, this article proposed shifting the previous paradigms of North Korean studies through the reconstruction of objectivity and positionality, and integrating the research achievements of women’s studies with North Korean women’s research.
