Naturalized and Foreign Citizens’
Korean Culture Experience Story Contest

 

 

Affiliated to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the King Sejong Institute Foundation is responsible for public relations on Korean language and culture abroad. This year, the foundation plans to publish web-cartoons about “Korean culture in foreign people’s eyes.” In this program, we are accepting naturalized and foreign citizens’ Korean culture experience stories.

 

1. Overview

Participants

  • Foreign residents in Korea (international students, marriage immigrants, foreign workers, or Koreans with foreign citizenship) or naturalized Koreans

  • Contest winners should be present at the award ceremony (scheduled on Sat, April 30). If not possible, you must attend a follow-up interview with the foundation for detailing your story.

Contest period

  • Thu, March 10 – Sun, April 10, 2016, 23:00

Winner announcement

  • The date may change, depending on the organizer’s needs.

Content

  • Subject: impressive experiences of Korean culture in the form of an essay (in Korean, English, or Chinese) (you may submit multiple stories)

  • Example: “differences between Korean and Mongolian marriage cultures,” “you can enjoy a roller coaster on Korean buses,” “Koreans’ competition over paying for dinner,” “drinking culture in Korea,” “Korea’s empty words: never take them literally!”

  • Quantity: around 2 pages of A4 size paper (approx. 2,000 words on the attached form)

  • Submissions: 3 documents (application, essay, and agreement forms)

  • Award winning works will be produced as web-cartoons and distributed all around the world.

  • Each web-cartoon presents the winner as its main character, revealing his/her name and personality.

3. Award Ceremony

  • The date may change, depending on the organizer’s needs.

Ceremony place: King Sejong Institute Foundation Meeting Room

  • Address: 7th floor, National Library of Korea, 201, Banpodae-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul

  • Transportation fee is provided for provincial residents.

4. Remarks

  • You may be deprived of the award if you are out of contact for more than 2 days since the announcement of winners, absent from the award ceremony, or unable to have an interview with the foundation.

  • You will be deprived of the award and the accompanying prize money will be returned if your work is found to contain plagiarized content or have already won from another contest. Also you should to take full responsibility of any copyright disputes with a third party arising out of plagiarism.
