Interest-Group Politics and American Pluralism: Case of American Jewish

Presenter: Prof. Sung-jin Yoo (Scranton Honors Program, Ewha)

Sung-jin Yoo is an Assistant Professor of the Scranton Honors Program at Ewha Womans University. Prof. Yoo’s area of expertise lies in Political Behavior, Public Opinion, and Political Psychology. Prof. Yoo has written many articles on voting behavior in leading journals including Journal of Politics, Korean Political Science Review, Korean Journal of International Relations, Journal of American Studies, and so on. Some of recent his publication includes “Two Types of Neutrality: Ambivalence versus Indifference and Political Participation” Journal of Politics (2010), “Tea-party Movement and the Changes of US Party Politics” with Jin Min Chung Journal of Party Studies (In Korean, 2011), and "An empirical Analysis of Political Tolerance in Korea: Public Attitude toward Socio-political Rights of the Least-liked Group" National Strategy (In Korean, 2011). He received his Ph. D. from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2006. Prof. Park can be reached at sjinny1@ewha.ac.kr.

Abstract

This paper examines political influence of American Jewish and explores how they could rise up as one of the most influential interest-groups in the US. The findings of this paper show that the political influence of American Jewish has been derived from their efforts to construct both local and national networks and to strengthen positive public attitude toward them, rather than mobilizing power of resources. It suggests an important implication to minority group aiming to increase their political influence such as Korean Americans. The success of Korean Americans is dependent upon whether they are able to construct in- and out-group network and to arise positive attitude of mass public toward them.
