침묵으로 쓰는 백래시 시대의 페미니스트 페다고지

본 연구는 페미니즘 교육 현장에서 침묵이 발생한 다양한 상황을 짚어보며, 각 상황에 결부된 복합적 맥락과 교육 구성원들 간에 발생 중인 권력의 역동을 읽어본다.

교육 공간에서 침묵은 참여와 대비되는 억압의 결과물, 교수자가 극복해야 할 신호로 받아들여졌다. 그러나 실제 교육 현장 안의 침묵 상황에는 단순히 긍정적이고 부정적인 것으로만 해석할 수 없는 복합적이고 중층적인 의미와 맥락이 존재했다. 페미니스트와 페미니즘에 대한 공격이 활성화된 이 시기, 침묵에 담긴 저항, 배려, 공감, 동의, 허용, 냉담, 휴식 그리고 성찰 등의 두터운 의미를 읽어내는 작업은 교수자-학습자, 학습자-학습자 사이의 교차적이고 역동적인 권력의 이동 과정을 파악하기 위한 시도로 이어졌다.

본 연구는 침묵이 페미니스트 교수자에게 권위에 대한 딜레마를 극복할 비폭력적 도구이자 페미니스트 페다고지의 거시적 목표를 달성하기 위한 확장된 전략의 도구가 될 수 있다는 분석과 함께 페미니스트 교실 안의 페미니스트들에게 백래시의 활로로서 침묵의 활용 방안을 제안한다.

Feminist Pedagogy through the Silence in a Time of Backlash

This study looks back at the various situations in which silence occurred in the feminist classroom and examines the complex context and the power dynamics between participants. 

  In learning settings, silence has often been concerned as a result of oppression, which contrasts with participation and is a signal that the professor should overcome. However, there has always been a complex, multidimensional meaning and context in the actual silence situation that is hard to be interpreted simply as positive or negative. In a time of backlash, contemplating the complex meaning of the silence, such as resistance, consideration, empathy, consent, acceptance, coldness, rest, and reflection, allow us to grasp the cross and dynamic process of power movement between instructors and learners.

  As a way out of backlash, silence can be a non-violent tool to overcome the dilemma of authority for feminist instructors and an expanded strategy to achieve feminist pedagogy’s macroscopic goals.
