Introduction to Academic English Writing by Prof. Brendan Howe & Prof. Heather Willoughby

Introduction to Academic English Writing, the third publication of the Jang-Hee Yoo Series on International Studies, was written by academics with an inter-disciplinary and international background, who draw on many years of experience of teaching university courses in the social sciences and humanities. The authors identify key common failings and address them with simple rules, guidelines and models. This book aims to provide a service to non-native English speaking students (although many native speakers could also find useful material within its pages), who are either applying to, or have been accepted onto a course in which the teaching medium is English. It contains a handy reference section (Chapter 2) on some of the most important elements of grammar, and common grammatical mistakes encountered when non-native English speakers embark upon academic English writing projects. However, it is not a grammar book. It is a practical self-help book designed to teach the student the fundamental rules for the construction of sentences, paragraphs, essays and larger research projects, while at the same time avoiding some of the pitfalls (such as plagiarism) that often serve to undermine written submissions.
